The Column

The design of his Column (The Monument: 3rd Annual Exhibition of the Soros Centre of Contemporary Art - Riga, 1995, plaster, height 2.50 m) was determined by its very location in Riga’s historic townscape and partly due to its imperial predecessor - a nineteenth-century Russian victory column. Karlis Alainis made use of the Ionic order, and his only departure from its classical proportions - the change of height - helped him suggest a new interpretation of the historical past and harmonise the centre-oriented St. Jacob’s Square near the House of Parliment.
